The Nutrilite History (Part1)

THE BEGINNING


Nutrilite has a history that dates back to the early decades of the twentieth century when one man set out on a mission. Carl F. Rehnborg was an adventurous young businessman working in the 1920s in China. While living in China in the early 1920s, Carl F. Rehnborg noticed, amid unforgettable malnutrition and disease, an important connection between the foods people ate and their overall health.

  • In farming communities, where fresh fruits and vegetables were plentiful, people were much healthier overall.
  • In the cities, where diets included far more sugar, salt, and fat, Carl noted that there were many more instances of critical diseases, such as scurvy and beriberi.
During political unrest in Shanghai, Carl was isolated in a protected enclave. There, he conceived the idea of using nutritional elements missing from the typical diet as a way to improve overall health.
  • Carl supplemented his meager diet with soups from what was available: local herbs, grasses, and vegetables, along with rusty nails (for iron), and lime stone and ground-up animal bones (for calcium).
  • He shared his broth with a few friends, although the flavor was far from palatable.
  • Months later, Carl and his friends who ate the nutrient-rich broth emerged from their enclave much healthier than those who had eaten only army rations.
Returning to the United States, Carl set up a small laboratory on California's Balboa Island, where, over the next six years, he conducted experiments using different plant varieties.
  • He developed a way to dry these plants while still preserving their important nutrients.
  • He created a formulation of alfalfa, watercress, and parsley, which became the basis of his first product.

Anemia in India

What is Anemia


Literally any condition involving a decrease in the hemoglobin level of the blood below normal. Anemia is a medical condition in which the red blood cell count or hemoglobin is less than normal. The normal level of hemoglobin is generally different in males and females. For men, anemia is typically defined as hemoglobin level of less than 13.5 gram/100ml and in women as hemoglobin of less than 12.0 gram/100ml. These definitions may vary slightly depending on the source and the laboratory reference used.

Symptoms of Anemia
  1. Tiredness.
  2. Fatigue easily.
  3. Pale appearance
  4. Palpitations development (Feeling of heart racing)
  5. Becoming short of breathing
  6. Hair loss (Some time)
  7. Sense of feeling not well
  8. Frequent infections.

Anemia and India

Estimates suggest that over one third of the world’s population suffers from anemia, mostly iron deficiency anemia. India continues to be one of the countries with very high prevalence. National Family Health Survey (NFHS-3) reveals the prevalence of anemia to be 70-80% in children, 70% in pregnant women and 24% in adult men. Prevalence of anemia in India is high because of low dietary intake, poor availability of iron and chronic blood loss due to hook worm infestation and malaria. While anemia has well known adverse effects on physical and cognitive performance of individuals, the true toll of iron deficiency anemia lies in the ill-effects on maternal and fetal health. Poor nutritional status and anemia in pregnancy have consequences that extend over generations.

In order to tackle this pressing public health problem, a multi-pronged 12 x 12 initiative has been launched in the country. The initiative is targeted at all adolescents across the country with the aim for achieving hemoglobin level of 12 gm% by the age of 12 years by 2012. The important elements of the initiative are as follows:

  1. Capacity building.
  2. Health and nutritional education.
  3. Increase iron intake in diet.
  4. Supplementation of iron and folic acid.

  • Children                                 11-13 gm/dl
  • Adult males                           14-18 gm/dl
  • Adult females                        12-16 gm/dl
  • Males after middle age      12-15 gm/dl

Parents, Children and Nutrition

All parents want their children to be healthy. As elementary school aged children go through remarkable physical changes of all kinds, their food intake becomes a critical aspect of this growth and development. Recent research shows that nourishing food not only makes a child healthier, it makes him emotionally more stable, and it improves school performance. It appears then that paying attention to our children's diets pays high dividends. If only our children thought so, too! Because children tend to rank their parents' views on food along with their unpopular views on curfews, rock music, hair styles, etc., it is up to the parents to, first of all, be clever about insinuating nutritious foods into the family menus and, secondly, take a reasonable but hard line when other approaches fail.
Getting children to eat a variety of food containing adequate amount of protien, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals every day, can be a challenge. You want your children to have healthy diets, but in today's world there are plenty of junk food choices available to them. High fat, high calorie, sugary and salty foods are the major culprits in children's diet. Children are losing out on valuable nutrition, so how can they grow into strong healthy adults.
